Description :
After rehabilitating eight hospitals, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has focused on improving primary health-care centres in areas of greatest need. In addition, the ICRC is continuing its dialogue with the health authorities with a view to intensifying cooperation and supporting health policy decision-making. Highlights of the health programme include the refurbishment of the Basrah Teaching Hospital (whose director, Dr Akram, is interviewed here), which serves a region with some five million people, and refresher courses for nurses in the Basrah region in May and June 2002.
