Description : The Director of the Operations of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Pierre Kraehenbuehl, paid a six-day visit to the Russian Federation to familiarize himself with the humanitarian situation in Chechnya and meet senior Russian officials. Pierre Kraehenbuehl also visited displaced Chechens living in the "Sputnik" tent camp in Ingushetia as well as residents of an elderly home in Grozny. He visited water distribution system and the distribution of food assistance in Ingushetia. These films also portray the difficulties civilians encounter in their daily life. Over half the buildings in Grozny, the Chechen capital, have been damaged by explosions and gun shot. Basic services like water and power do not function or are in short supply. Thousands of people are endangered by landmines and booby traps — people like seventeen year old Islam who lost his arm and foot when he was trying to hide from a military patrol. Islam is being cared for in Grozny’s new Orthopaedic centre, which opened its doors a month ago. It has fitted a hundred people so far with artificial limbs, and hundreds more are waiting to be seen Last year, 450 people were registered as receiving treatment for explosives accidents — the real figuie could be much higher. Because of the highly volatile security situation, the International Committee of the Red Cross is one of only a tiny handful of humanitarian organisations who continue to operate in Chechnya. Priorities for the ICRC include providing people with clean water, providing medical supplies to hospitals, carrying out mine awareness programmes and providing basic food for people with little or no means of support.
