In Mogadishu, the focus constantly changes as the medieval world collides with 21stcentury technology. The contrast is striking in Hamar Jajab’s family. She lost her husband and brother in the civil conflict that’s raged in the country over the past twelve years and has struggled to bring up her family of seven children, selling a few vegetables in the local market. Her 19 year old son, Ahmed Moalim Ali has to fetch water for the household in plastic containers from the street corner — running water is a luxury in Somalia. But once he’s finished his water carrying duties, Ahmed attends a computer skills class at a privately owned Internet cafe in his neighbourhood...
