Description :
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been present in the country since 1989 and has become involved in orthopaedic programmes by offering its experience and technology in this field, through training courses for local staff, installation of machines and provision of specialised tools. Currently, the ICRC is represented in Vietnam by two Dutch orthopaedic surgeons, Bert Van Koll and Peter Poetsma. The latter is project manager in Ho Chi Minh City.
During this period, more than 20,000 prostheses have been made according to ICRC standards and technical parameters. The Vietnamese authorities cover the costs of producing prostheses for war-disabled people, but many victims of amputations do not meet the restrictive support criteria laid down by the ministry concerned. Therefore, the ICRC covered the costs of making artificial limbs for about 12,000 particularly needy people.
The Red Cross branches in all 61 provinces have volunteers who travel to the countryside and remote villages to identify all the mutilated people who do not have the financial support to have a prosthesis or to change their prosthesis if necessary.
