Description : The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has stepped up its operations in Haiti since armed confrontation broke out in early February. It is appealing for 4.6 million Swiss francs to cover the costs of extending its emergency operations over the coming months. The money is needed to cover the increased costs of medical and surgical care for the sick and wounded, and to strengthen existing Haitian Red Cross ambulance and first aid services. Over past weeks, the ICRC has worked with the Haitian Red Cross, running convoys of vital medical material to the north of the country which has been cut off by fighting from normal supply lines. Medical kits, each treating 100 war wounded, have so far been delivered to medical centres in the towns of St Marc, Gonaives and Cap-Haitian. Supplies have also been provided for the former Military Hospital in Port au Prince where a team of Cuban doctors are treating war-wounded. As the security situation in Haiti becomes increasingly unstable, the ICRC is extremely concerned about the lack of respect for medical personnel and other humanitarian staff, as well as to patients. It is stepping up its dialogue with political leaders and armed groups, urging them to take all measures to ensure that the safety of civilians and medical personnel is better protected.
