Description :
The 2005 Emergency Appeals of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will
be presented in Geneva on 8 December 2004 by the organization’s President, Jakob
Kellenberger. They include a budget of about 130 million Swiss Francs for Sudan, an
increase of 84 million Francs compared to the 2004 Emergency Appeals. The ICRC president was in Darfur to see the situation on the ground for himself. He met government officials in Al Fashir, Kutum and Zalingy. His objective was to raise awareness and examine the overall humanitarian situation and challenges in Sudan, both immediate and in the future. ICRC fears a looming humanitarian disaster in Darfur because of anticipated food shortages next year. Since the president’s first visit in March, humanitarian access to Darfur has improved considerably. As a result, the ICRC has been able to carry out a major humanitarian operation, together with the Sudanese Red Crescent and its other Red Cross/Red Crescent partners. With nearly 2000 employees and a budget of 78 million dollars, with a planned expenditure of 112 million dollars next year, Sudan will be ICRC’s largest operation worldwide. The ICRC is providing relief and essential services to hundreds of thousands of residents and displaced people to preserve their lives and livelihoods.
