First World War films. On April 20th for the very first time, unique documents will be shown at “Visions du Reel”, the international film festival to be held in Nyon, Switzerland from 18 to 24 April 2005. These are the first films in the history of humanity that bear witness to humanitarian aid. Filmed in the early years of the twenties, they deal with problems left unresolved by the First World War: repatriating prisoners of war (some 40 000 soldiers being transported across the Baltic Sea to Russia and Germany), fighting epidemics, looking after children and caring for refugees in the regions called nowadays Central Europe, the Baltic States and Turkey.
