Description :
The ICRC in 2003 decided to support eight clinics of the Ministry of Health in Lofa County. This support included rehabilitation of the damaged clinics, training of the staff working in these health facilities and supply of essential drugs and medical materials. As there was no certified midwife, ICRC decided to organize several training programmes for traditional midwives working in the supported health facilities and it's catchment area's. ICRC midwives field officers have followed training of trainers course are responsible for conducting these Trained Traditional Midwives (TTM) trainings. This training is done in collaboration with the Family Health Division / Ministry of Health (FHD/MoH). The training course lasts 6 months and the curriculum is prepared by the FHD/MoH. At the end of the graduation the TTMs are given delivery kits provided by ICRC. The TTMs are illiterate and speak a vernacular language (Loma, Bangdi, Mandingo, Kpelleh for the principal ones of this region)
