Le CICR conduit au Soudan sa plus grande opération au monde, à laquelle participent plus de 1 600 collaborateurs nationaux et 160 expatriés menant une grande variété d’activités pour les personnes touchées par le conflit. Ci-après, le point sur les activités du CICR entre janvier et juin 2007.
Au cours des six premiers mois de l’année, le CICR au Soudan a travaillé par l’intermédiaire de ses huit bureaux répartis dans les trois États du Darfour, afin de promouvoir le respect des civils et de fournir l’assistance nécessaire à des milliers de personnes en détresse, malgré un accès irrégulier et difficile aux zones rurales du fait de l’insécurité qui y règne.
Il a en outre continué de répondre à d’autres conséquences du conflit et de renforcer les capacités dans le sud du pays, depuis ses bureaux à Juba et Malakal.
Bien que le CICR concentre son travail au Darfour dans les zones rurales, il a dû intervenir pour répondre aux besoins essentiels à Gereida et Tawila, où d’autres organisations ont dû se retirer pour des raisons de sécurité. Il espère que d’autres organisations reprendront bientôt leurs activités dans ces camps.
Approvisionnement en eau potable
Le CICR a réhabilité des points d’eau dans les zones rurales, approvisionnant plus de 470 000 personnes au Darfour (ainsi que leur bétail) en eau potable :
77 pompes à main ont été réparées ;
46 puits protégés ont été rénovés ;
37 stations de distribution d’eau (points d’eau disposant d’un équipement mécanisé) ont été réhabilitées dans 107 campements, ainsi que le long des voies migratoires des communautés nomades ;
les autorités locales ont reçu une assistance pour réhabiliter deux réseaux urbains d’approvisionnement en eau.
Sudan is the ICRC's largest operation worldwide with more than 1,600 national and 160 expatriate staff involved in a wide range of activities on behalf of people affected by the conflict. The following is an update of ICRC activities for the period January to June 2007.
During the first six months of the year, the ICRC in Sudan worked through its eight offices in the three states of Darfur to promote respect for civilians and provide necessary assistance to thousands of people in need, despite irregular and difficult access to rural areas caused by prevailing insecurity. It also continued to address other consequences of the conflict and build capacities in the South of the country, from its offices in Juba and Malakal.
Although ICRC's focuses its work in Darfur in rural areas, it had to step in to provide for basic needs in Gereida and Tawila, where other organizations had to pull out for security reasons. It hopes that other organizations will soon resume their activities in these camps.
Emergency assistance
Provision of clean water
ICRC rehabilitated water points in rural areas, providing more than 470,000 people in Darfur (as well as their livestock) with safe drinking water:
77 hand pumps were repaired;
46 protected wells were upgraded;
37 water yards (water points with mechanized equipment) were rehabilitated in 107 settlements, also along migration routes of nomadic communities;
local authorities were assisted in the rehabilitation of two urban water networks.
