Description :
From April until June 2008, the ICRC carried out a large-scale campaign to distribute seeds and tools to farming families in Darfur. The campaign ended before the rainy season, that was expected to start in late July. It reached about 40.000 families, most of whom (65%) inhabit the Jabal Marra area in North Darfur; others are in western and southern Darfur. The purpose of the campaign was to enable communities to maintain their traditional livelihoods, and to prevent displacement. Food rations were also given to each family so that they could plant their seed instead of having to eat it. Food rations were also given to each family so that they could save their crop seeds for planting instead of eating them.
Last year, local economies in several areas were disrupted by fighting, lawlessness and the failure of crops.
