Description : A training that boosts access to water: Darfuris learn to dig a well for their communities

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organised a 2-week Hand-dug Well training course in April and May for 14 participants in the locality of Kabkabiya, to the west of the North Darfur region. The course brought together participants from 8 different communities who learned how to dig and build a well with very basic material so that they may contribute to the livelihood of their people. "If each trainee returns home and builds one well in his own community, at least 4'000 people will end up having regular access to water", said Samuel Bonnet, the ICRC's Water and Habitat Engineer who organised the training. The well that was built during this training alone will serve around 500 beneficiaries. The ICRC also provided the necessary tools and material for the trainees to be able to dig and build new wells.
