Just 150 years ago, on 24 June 1859, Henry Dunant was deeply shocked to witness the inhumanity with which the opposing sides in the battle of Solferino – the Austrian troops and those of the Franco- Sardinian coalition – treated one another.
Back in Geneva, he proposed putting in place humanitarian assistance for the wounded in times of war. The idea of the Red Cross was born.
To mark this 150th anniversary, and as part of the Our world. Your move campaign, several sites linked to the history of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are being illuminated between 24 June and 4 July 2009.
At each site, background information is provided on different aspects of the Red Cross, the life of Henry Dunant or the Geneva Conventions.
