On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger affirmed that the essential spirit of the Conventions - to uphold life and dignity in the midst of armed conflict - is as relevant today as it was 60 years ago. However, international humanitarian law must continue to evolve to respond to the changing nature of armed conflict.
