On 8 May, ICRC staff at headquarters and at more than 30 delegations, together with around a dozen National Societies, organize a global sports relay on all five continents.
This global relay kicks off with the easternmost participating delegation – Suva – and end some 15 hours later with one of the delegations located in the Americas. Some delegations have put their own spin on the initial idea of a running-only event, choosing another activity such as roller-skating, walking, friendly wheelchair races or a game of pétanque (bowls).
Each delegation's event starts at 4 p.m. local time and last for around an hour.
Runners in Geneva take turns running a two-kilometre course as they accompany their field colleagues throughout the global relay (from around 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Swiss time). The daylong relay in Geneva is punctuated by the main event from 4 to 5 p.m. This is when HQ-based staff, led by President Maurer, take their turn in carrying the virtual baton in the global relay.
