Sana'a/Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is deeply shocked and dismayed by the death of one of its staff members, Hussein Saleh, who was killed this morning while on duty in the north of Abyan governorate.

Mr Saleh and three other staff members were assessing the humanitarian situation in the region, which has been severely affected by the recent fighting. The circumstances behind this incident remain unclear.

"We are devastated by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague Hussein," said Eric Marclay, the head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen. "He was a very motivated and devoted staff member. He played a tremendously crucial role within his team helping hundreds of thousands of people in the south, and lost his life while performing humanitarian work."

The entire ICRC extends its deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Mr Saleh was 35 years old. A Yemeni national, he joined the ICRC two years ago and was working as the adviser to the ICRC's head of office in Aden. He and his wife had four children and were expecting a new baby.
