Between 12 and 19 February 2014, a temporary courtroom was set up in Minova, a town on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo. For eight days, judges who had travelled to Minova from Goma listed to the testimony of women who had been raped. 39 soldiers were on trial, charged with participating in the rape of around 1,000 women from Minova – and a number of men and children – during November 2012.
This story also holds a glimpse of hope: that sexual violence will in future be the subject of more systematic prosecution and judgment, at all times and under all circumstances, in order to bring an end to impunity.
