Description :
The ICRC takes part in the withdrawal and evacuation of the bodies of armed forces involved in the conflict from the Donetsk airport at several occasions between February and May 2015. This has been agreed upon will all parties involved, upon the request of local authorities. An ICRC forensic expert and other staff are present during the operation. The ICRC provided body bags to the authorities in charge to facilitate the process.
Well over 1,000 people are still missing as a result of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The ICRC is helping the families trace their missing relatives and is assisting the authorities in identifying remains. It is also providing training and technical assistance on both sides of the front lines to forensic institutions and NGOs involved in searching for, recovering and identifying mortal remains.
