Description :
Years of conflict in South Sudan have left an unknown number of persons with disabilities. In 2019 alone, the orthopedic centers supported by the ICRC has admitted 730 new patients, including 25% of amputees. Men make up more than 70% of the patients admitted to the orthopedic centers. This is often linked to injuries connected to the conflict, violent cattle raids or revenge killings.
ICRC is the only organization to provide specialized prosthesis and orthosis services in South Sudan. This includes wheelchairs, crutches, prosthesis, orthosis, as well as accommodation and food during the treatment
At ICRC, we believe sport helps to reshape perceptions and assumptions about what people with disabilities can do. ICRC supports wheelchair basketball and believes sport fosters social inclusion by breaking barriers of stigma and exclusion associated with disabilities.
This is the third year ICRC and the South Sudan Wheelchair Basketball Association organize a training and a tournament. The number of players has more than doubled since last year. 80 players, including 15 women, from all over the country have come to Juba, thanks to the support of the ICRC, to participate in a three-week wheelchair basketball training and a tournament.
Everything is difficult for persons with disabilities in South Sudan: access to healthcare, to education, to justice and to income opportunities. Wheelchair basketball offers some of them a chance to look at their disability as an opportunity.
