Description :
Meet Mariam, 11, and her sister Bissan, 9. Life has not been easy, especially after the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon took a heavy toll on their village. Once a small community of 400 families, Deir Seryen is now home to just a hundred or so.
Mariam and Bissan have not been to school for eight months and can only study online because of internet connection problems. The village has suffered a severe water shortage since winter, when the Taybeh pumping station stopped working properly.
The International Committee of the Red Cross installed five large water tanks and supplied around 300,000 litres of water in a month and a half, as well as distributing food parcels, and it is these contributions that have provided a lifeline for families like Maryam and Bissan's. Although they are little girls, Mariam and Bissan help their parents by fetching water every day. This simple but vital task reduces the financial burden for many families, saving them from having to transport water by lorry, a cost that has become unaffordable for many families in the village.
