Description : An ICRC surgeon checks on wounded patients in a Jalalabad hospital with his Afghan counterpart. The ICRC undertook to support and rehabilitate the main hospital in Jalalabad after surveys revealed that the medical care available to the population of the Nangarhar and surrounding provinces was inadequate and of an extremely poor standard. Meanwhile many casualties from the fighting in Kabul were reaching Jalalabad hospitals. The ICRC medical team's main purpose is to train local doctors and nurses in war-surgery techniques and specialized care for the wounded.
