UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY N°2011
From early beginnings when volunteer refugee teachers gathered together groups of children whom they taught as best they could in tents and under trees, without books and pencils, an organised school system has grown up under UNESCO supervision.
Yet everywhere the demand for education among refugees had been increasing until by 1952 there were 20'000 children seeking admission in UNRWA schools for whom there was no room.
To meet this situation the main contributing countries voted a $377'000 increase for schools in November, thereby bringing UNRWA's education budget up to a million dollars. 1953 will see the appointment of 500 new teachers, an increase in salaries and a total of 80'000 children in UNRWA schools (some 57'000 are in governement and private schools, which in certain cases receive special UNRWA grants).
This picture shows the kindergarten at Dekwani camp, Lebanon, where although there is no blackboard, few books and the children sit bare foot on the floor, there is a keen attendance.
