Description :
ICRC Press Release - 28 June 2007
Geneva (ICRC) - At a ceremony held on 28 June at the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Geneva state councillor Laurent Moutinot and ICRC president Jakob Kellenberger signed a new agreement committing the canton of Geneva to provide the ICRC with financial support to the extent of 3 million Swiss francs annually for a period of three years.
"Today, the canton of Geneva reaffirms its commitment to support that most Genevan of international organizations and the humanitarian principles it defends," Mr Moutinot said in his address.
The funds will be used to back the ICRC's efforts to help the victims of armed conflicts, especially those which are largely unknown to the general public and in which it is therefore more difficult to fund humanitarian activities.
"To remain at the side of all conflict victims is a constant challenge for our delegates," said Mr Kellenberger. "The ICRC is therefore all the more appreciative of the canton of Geneva's gesture of solidarity with the victims of forgotten conflicts."
In 2004, the canton signed an agreement with the ICRC formalizing its commitment to help victims of forgotten conflicts. Since then, it has allocated 9 million francs to the ICRC's activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Somalia, Liberia, Burundi, Côte d'Ivoire, Georgia and other countries in conflict.
The canton of Geneva provides this support within the framework of the "law on the funding of international solidarity" and as part of its efforts to uphold human rights.
