Description : Adrian Blooinger is agronomist and is based in Uvira. With the veterinary local authority, Adrian and Raymond, a Congolese ICRC veterinary technician stride up and down the tracks of the High and Medium Plateaux and of the Ruzizi plain to vaccinate against anthrax more than 130,000 cows.

"The region is prone to an accute infectious disease, called anthrax for animal (safe fro human), that cause sudden deaths of animals. This disease is one of the most important pathologies threatening the cattle health in the region."

"Logistic is definitely a challenge, espacially during the rainy season when the tracks litteraly disappear. In some areas, we bring the vaccins by planes or vehicules and finally on foot. What is very important when you do vaccination campaigns is to respect the cold chain. We need to store the vaccins in big freezers, then in cool boxes carried by the team.
We work hand in hand with IPAPEL, the veterinary local authority, and volunteers of the Congolese Red Cross are hired during the operations. The ICRC would not be able to do this campaign without its partner and their vast network. More than 90 local vaccinators and 150 porters take part in this campaign.
