Description :
War Surgery, Volume 2 describes the ICRC's approach to providing surgical care within the context of war: harsh settings, precarious security conditions, shortages of supplies, unsophisticated technology and limited human resources. In conflicts today, casualties of war are often sent first to the isolated general surgeon in a rural district hospital: frequently, that is where they will remain for treatment.
Working with limited resources requires good clinical skills and effective application of the basic principles of wound care. It usually also implies the absence of diagnostic means beyond a simple X-ray, the lack of mechanical ventilation and, often, operating without sufficient blood for transfusion. Under these circumstances, applying the appropriate clinical techniques and protocols is essential for saving lives. This manual on war surgery has been prepared with those considerations in mind.
The first volume of War Surgery, published in 2009, dealt with general principles; the second deals with wound ballistics, epidemiology, main presenting clinical picture, surgical treatment and medical complications resulting from war wounds.
