In July 2013, more than 300 families, many of them headed by women, had to leave their homes in Muqdadiya district in Diyala Governorate, some 50 km north-east of Baquba, in yet another wave of violence. Like many others in this country, wracked by decades of conflict, they found refuge with their relatives in neighbouring villages, putting an additional burden on the host community. Sharing overcrowded rooms with several families, they live in fear and uncertainty about the future. The ICRC has provided these families with food, blankets, hygiene items, kitchen sets and other household necessities.

Displacement is particularly hard on children. Eight-year-old Abdullah loves to play, but he also remembers everything that happened the night before he had to flee with his mother, aunt and three siblings.
