The event aimed to intensify awareness that PNRC and IHL exist to give protection not only to the soldiers but also to civilians in the Philippines.
Organizations such as the Department of Education- Marikina Division, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP); students from different colleges and universities in Manila; Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE); Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH); Department of National Defense (DND), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) participated in the gathering on August 15, 2009.
This year's commemoration of the IHL month with the theme "Geneva Conventions: Humanity Amidst Armed Conflict", aims to increase awareness on the basic principles of IHL and promote its observance in times of armed conflict.
Outside Manila, thousands of supporters gathered in Masbate City, Laoag City, Butuan City, Iloilo City and General Santos City to advocate for the observance of the Geneva Conventions in the country.
