Description :
The Project for Strengthening the Women Deprived of Freedom of Buen Pastor is based on the production and marketing of handicrafts produced by detainees. The participants attend workshops about craft techniques and also learn about management, marketing, personal development, cooperatives and first aid, among other topics. Later, they might be able to develop their own cooperatives after leaving the detention centre. The project has the overall objective of social reintegration and the specific objective of contributing to the improvment of socioeconomic conditions and to stimulate social and family ties of these women through the promotion of skills and capabilities.
The project started in late 2008, when a group a detainees presented a proposal for the formation of an association of artisans, where they could acquire and improve their skills in handicraft production and achieve sales to sustain daily and economic support for their families.
The participants have classes twice a week, each lasting two hours. These classes are ministered by a consultant of the Paraguayan Red Cross and the ICRC part of the Paraguayan Institute of Crafts. The products created in the classroom and during their free time inside the detention center are marketed by another consultant who takes the products to private customers as well as a store in AsunciĆ³n, which exports most of them to the United Kingdom. The inputs for the manufacture are donated by the ICRC.
