Description : Between July 2009 and June 2010, in Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central provinces, the ICRC assisted 12,700 farmers who had suffered from recurring drought and political violence in 2008. The ICRC distributed seeds and carried out training of the farmers on Conservation agriculture techniques. With the assistance, most farmers were able to significantly increase their production. In average, they produced five tons of maize per hectare, compared to an average of 1.5 tons in previous years.
In Ward 17 of Mudzi district, though, in Mashonaland East province, the farmers faced a severe drought and most crops were lost, which led the ICRC to assist them with a one-off distribution of maize beginning of July 2010.
The distribution was organised in three different spots in Ward 17: Fuchira, Nyahuku and St-Pius. The ICRC assisted a total of 1,578 households (7,890 persons) from 28 villages. Each household received one 50kg bag of maize.
