Egypt: Enhancing skills in handling emergency trauma

Cairo (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Curative and Critical Care Sector of the Ministry of Health and Population held a joint three-day course from 14 to 16 October on the management of emergency-room trauma.

Some 22 doctors working in Cairo hospitals attended. "We organized this course to support Egyptian doctors in their efforts to provide emergency treatment for wounded or sick patients," said Marianne Gasser, head of the ICRC delegation in Cairo.

The course, led by two ICRC specialist surgeons, is part of a broader ICRC initiative aimed at supporting the mass casualty management and planning of Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population. It provided an overview of the basics of trauma management through lectures, practical demonstrations and simulated diagnostic exercises.

According to Dr Mohamed Sultan, head of critical care and ambulance services sector at the Ministry of Health and Population, "the course reinforced the skills of our doctors in managing emergency trauma cases, which in turn will improve the level and quality of care for our patients."

The ICRC has been working in Egypt intermittently since 1914. It focuses primarily on working closely with the Egyptian Red Crescent to expand the capability of that organization to respond to emergency humanitarian needs, especially by administering first aid, and on promoting the incorporation of international humanitarian law into domestic legislation, military training and academic curricula throughout the Arab world.
