Rakhine State, Mrauk-U Township, Na Gar Kwayt. With an ICRC cash grant, U Raw Fit bought two goats and a canoe. The goats had four kids. U Raw Fit get regular income from renting the canoe to his neighbours, the village being reachable only by boat and expects to make a profit when he sells his goats in the coming months. He says that he now has a more regular source of income than in the past, when he worked as a casual labourer for a few days a month.

Description :
In Myanmar, Muslim and Buddhist communities in Rakhine State have seen their livelihoods weakened as a result of outbreaks of intercommunal violence in 2012. Communities with restricted freedom of movement in particular have fewer opportunities to find employment as casual labour or sell their agricultural produce or fish in the market.
With Rakhine being one of the poorer States in Myanmar, the humanitarian consequences of the inter-communal violence adds to widespread chronic poverty and underdevelopment, which increased both communities’ vulnerability.
The ICRC has been supporting vulnerable families of both communities to begin or resume income-generating activities with the help of grants, supplies or equipment. To date, the programme has benefited 1564 households in Rakhine state.
