Centres for Hope: Lying on a pediatric scale, Baby Amina's* tiny body takes up only a fraction of the space it should. Malnutrition has hobbled her growth and exposed her bones. Though she should weigh 4.8 kilograms, the needle on the scale says she weighs only 2.6 kilograms. Baby Amina* is one of 55,000 children under age 5 in Somalia in dire need of life-saving therapeutic treatment. Humanitarian estimates indicate that more than 300,000 children are only slightly healthier, classified as acutely malnourished. This nutritional deficiency leaves the children weak and may cause stunting, denying them the opportunity to thrive and reach their full development potential. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is supporting two stabilization centres in Somalia where the majority of the affected children live. These stabilization centres, though insufficient on their own, are critical venues where the children are admitted and placed on a nutritional feeding program that sets them on the path of recovery. Between January and July this year the centres admitted 2,527 children.
