"ICRC President meets with his Highness the Emir of Kuwait, 11 January 2016
Kuwait (ICRC) – On 11 January 2016, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, paid a one-day official visit to Kuwait.
Mr. Maurer met with HH the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to thank him for the State of Kuwait’s generous financial contributions and diplomatic support to ICRC’s humanitarian efforts in the Middle East. During the meeting, they exchanged views on the dire humanitarian situation in conflict-affected countries in the region and Mr. Maurer reaffirmed ICRC's commitment to neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian action.
The president of the ICRC underscored the importance of Kuwait’s leading humanitarian role and the urgent need for the international community to unify and scale up its efforts in order to respond to the current humanitarian challenges. “This visit highlights ICRC’s strategic ties and partnership with the State of Kuwait to respond to the humanitarian needs of the victims of armed conflicts and other situations of violence worldwide”, he added.
During this visit, the ICRC President also met with the Former Prime Minister, HE Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah to express his appreciation for the continuous diplomatic and financial support of the Kuwaiti government.
President Maurer also met with Dr. Hilal Al-Sayer, president of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society as well as the Chairman of the International Islamic Charitable Organization and Advisor to the Amiri Diwan, HE Dr. Abdullah Matouq Al-Matouq. During these meetings, Mr Maurer underlined KRCS’s distinguished role in various humanitarian response operations worldwide and expressed his appreciation to IICO’s support to ICRC’s action for Syrian refugees.
Mr. Maurer’s last visit to Kuwait was in 2015 where he also met with HH the Amir to thank him and the State of Kuwait for their generous support and update HH with ICRC’s operations in conflict-affected areas in the region.
The ICRC has been in Kuwait since the 1990–91 Gulf War. It focuses on humanitarian needs remaining from that war or arising from current armed conflicts and other situations of violence in the wider region. The regional delegation in Kuwait covers the six countries belonging to the Gulf Cooperation Council. "
