Description :
On 23 May 2017, fighting erupted between Islamic State Ranao and the Philippine military in the city of Marawi, population of about 210,000. Thousands of its residents fled and sought safety in neighboring areas such as Saguiaran municipality and Iligan City. Many of them are staying with relatives, while others sought shelter at evacuation centers. Many of the centres are set up in schools and gymnasiums.
Since the onset of the fighting, the ICRC has been on the ground assisting the affected population with their immediate and basic needs in food, water, sanitation and health. It has also been reminding parties to the conflict to spare the lives of those who are not participating in the hostilities. Together with the Philippine National Red Cross, the ICRC has distributed food rations to more than 6,500 displaced families, provided 10,000 displaced people with continued access to clean potable water and access to sanitation facilities. A total of 13 hospitals were assisted to enhance their capacity to provide basic health care to thousands of people through the donation of medical supplies. The ICRC has also been actively assisting the authorities on the proper retrieval of human remains through technical support and provision of protective equipment.
