Description :
Menaka is a semi-arid and very rural area in Mali which borders Niger. Different armed groups are present in this area, as well as militias and armed forces. It is a region where different ethnic groups and communities live, including Peuhls, Arabs, Sondhaï, and Touaregs. Military operations and related conflicts, as well as climate shocks (it is one of the areas worst affected by severe droughts) have forced many people to flee villages and rural areas to the town Menaka, where there are several camps in which the ICRC has carried out distributions. Inter-communal tensions or violence have also risen. People and animals both need access to water, and the strong competition between communities to access it has been a key factor in driving people from their homes.
Displaced communities continue to struggle to access water because of persistent insecurity in Menaka, as well as restrictions on their freedom of movement, imposed both by authorities or armed groups.
Host communities already face a very precarious economic situation, worsened by the arrival of many displaced, who are otherwise more vulnerable and have greater needs. Host communities are also affected by the restrictions in movement. Displaced communities are from different ethnicities, living together in close proximity in these sites (Touareg, Peuhls, Arabs).
