Description :
The village is one of the areas where fishermen received outboard engines and fishing gear, including nets, from the ICRC and the Kenya Red Cross Society. Instability in Lamu County led to an off-again-on-again ban on night fishing, which impacted fishermen who relied on tides and winds to get to waters deep enough to fish in. The engines help them to be more efficient, regardless of tides, winds, or time of day.
The program started in 2017 with outboard engines that helped 300 fishermen in coastal areas in northern Kenya. This was followed by another 340 fishermen in 2018 as well as fishing gear such as nets. In 2019, the program hopes to reach more than 600 fishermen with engines and fishing gear.
