Description :
The COVID-19 pandemic has a terrible impact on the lives of fishermen. Over 8000 families rely on the fish industry in the city. The lockdown severely impacted them over the past few weeks since there is a lower demand and therefore lower incomes.
He tells: “More than more than 10 people work on the same boat and this is their sole source of income. The COVID-19 is an extra challenge to what we already endure in our daily life. It comes in addition to the restrictions on movement we face whenever we sail for fishing and the expensive fuel to run our engines. (…) The closure of borders bans us from exporting the fish from Gaza, and we cannot afford to sell it at a lesser price in the local market, as the demand on fish has severely declined not only because of the pandemic, but also because people don’t tend to have fish on their tables for Iftar during Ramadan. The virus has affected the fishermen and the Palestinian population in general. Everyone is staying home, and no one is buying our fish. Also, prices went down, and fishermen tend not to work at all. Now it’s the fishing season, from April 1st until July 1st, and we are afraid we will lose the opportunity we await from year to year”.
