Description : Since the arrival of the pandemic in Myanmar, the ICRC has scaled up its COVID-19 response working with authorities, the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS), ethnic health organizations, and all communities to prevent and mitigate its impact, while addressing related humanitarian needs. At the end of 2021, for the first time since 2018, the ICRC, together with the Peace-talk Creation Group, was able to visit a quarantine facility in Mai Sak Pa Village to support the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO)’s COVID-19 Response Committee with supplies to help lessen the impact of COVID-19. The ICRC was also able to meet the KIO authorities and the directorate of Laiza Central Civilian Hospital.
Lying on the Chinese border, Laiza town has been under lockdown since November 2 2021 due to a new COVID-19 outbreak. In recent months, more than 3000 positive cases were identified in the area. The pandemic remains a daily risk and an additional challenge for communities already severely impacted by a protracted armed conflict. The struggle to maintain a livelihood while facing movement restrictions, including across the border, due to both the conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic is the norm here. The ICRC thus plans to return with more assistance in the future.
