Description : "The ICRC Sub Delegation in Peshawar organized a sports festival for person with disabilities to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities Day. The aim of the event is to highlight a broader perspective of accessibility which is the foremost and an integral component of the ICRC`s Physical Rehabilitation Program. 150 players with physical disabilities across the province participated in different sports and other events including wheelchair cricket, cricket for visually impaired, table tennis, marathon, debates, art competition and board games.
"The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been observing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) since 2012 in Pakistan through organizing different events to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with physical disability. Since then, the scope of the social inclusion component of the ICRC has focused on creating awareness about the challenges faced by the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and has reached large portion of the society and high-level government authorities. Moreover, all these years, the opportunities through these events have been extended to the national level in close coordination with a range of local Disabled People Organizations (DPOs), and relevant government authorities. These events provided opportunities for local DPOs to promote their work and to engage with PwDs across the country, by highlighting the PwDs` issues to the authorities and public, under a single banner.
"This year, the ICRC observed the day in close collaboration with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department in Peshawar with a broader perspective of accessibility which is the foremost and an integral component of the ICRC`s Physical Rehabilitation Program. The event was organized under the global theme of UN for this year IDPD “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world”. 150 players with physical disabilities across the province participated in different sports and other events including wheelchair cricket, cricket for visually impaired, table tennis, marathon, debates, art competition and board games. At the end of the event, prizes were distributed among the players and officials of this one-day sports festival.
"The Physical Rehabilitation Program of the ICRC has been assisting the PwDs since almost four (04) decades in Pakistan. In 2022 alone, more than 30,000 people have benefited from the ICRC-supported 20 physical rehabilitation centers and other facilities across the country. ICRC has always accessed the needs of persons with disabilities with a customized approach. The ICRC is striving for the special abilities of persons with disabilities to achieve their full potential in the society, and their journey from rehabilitation to inclusion.
"On this occasion, Mr. Jihad Nabhan, Head of the Sub Delegation Peshawar, said that “the ICRC has been providing physical rehabilitation services in Pakistan since 1984 and I am thankful that due to our innovation and partners in Pakistan, we are able to produce assistive equipment for People with Disabilities that are locally made, with local raw material, matching with International standards and with much lower costs, so soon we will be able to supply our operations worldwide from Pakistan if requested”.
"Organizing this event in partnership with Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department is another step towards gaining sustainability in terms of social inclusion of persons with disabilities."
