Description :
The region is facing a "double crisis" marked by escalating armed conflicts and a recently declared Ebola outbreak.
Nakiele, located in the highlands of the Fizi territory, has become a focal point for intense clashes between the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), pro-government militias such as the Wazalendo, and the Twirwaneho militia allied with the M23. These hostilities are causing massive civilian displacements, with many seeking refuge in Nakiele and its surrounding areas. The village's health center, supported by the ICRC, is under immense pressure, providing care to displaced people and addressing a surge in malaria cases, while struggling with severe shortages of essential medicines.
At the same time, the Ebola outbreak, declared on May 15, 2026, is beginning to spread in South Kivu, further worsening the humanitarian crisis. The ICRC and its partners are actively working to support local health facilities, conduct community awareness campaigns, and implement infection prevention measures in the affected areas.
