Description : As conflict rages across Eastern Congo, civilians who have already experienced over 30 years of war trauma have been increasingly targeted by artillery. The resurgence of the M23 conflict has seen heavy weapons, rockets and mortars hit homes and even displacement camps. 2 million civilians have been forced from their homes by the fighting. With armed forces on the offensive, families have little time to evacuate frontline areas and are frequently caught in the crossfire. Between October 2023 and January 2025, over 1300 people have been treated for conflict related injures at Goma’s Ndosho hospital. Many are victims of gunshot wounds or have been caught in the blast of explosions. As a result, limb amputations are common, and between 2023 and 2024, the physical rehabilitation programme of the International Red Cross in Congo has had to build over 400 prostheses and orthoses. For maimed civilians, a new prosthetic limb offers a lifeline amidst brutal conditions in displacement camps.
