Description :
The ICRC has supported SOMAGEP by providing the equipment needed to install four solar farms — with a fifth currently being installed — designed to power the borehole pumps. These photovoltaic installations, which operate pumps producing nearly 300 m³/h, along with their wire-mesh fencing, were completed as part of this partnership. They help to secure the supply of drinking water in the face of the energy crisis and fuel supply difficulties that were severely affecting the region. Thanks to the ICRC’s support for SOMAGEP, the resident and displaced populations of Sévaré — particularly those in the most vulnerable outlying neighbourhoods — now have improved access to drinking water. For its part, the water distribution company is reducing its operating costs and environmental footprint by replacing diesel generators with renewable energy, which is abundant in the region. The change is tangible for SOMAGEP’s customers. Bourti Kelly, who manages a water point in Sévaré, says: “Before, we used to spend the whole day wandering between neighbourhoods looking for a solar-powered borehole to get something to drink. The small sachets of water weren’t enough for washing or cooking.” Today, she says, “we have water from the morning until the evening’. As well as regaining their comfort, the financial savings are significant: ‘The money we used to spend on transport to fetch water can now be used to fill 40 to 50 buckets for our needs.’ He concluded: ‘Thank you very much for all the work you have done. May God bless you.’
