Description :
Santa Isabel II colonie in Villanueva, in the suburbs of Guatemala city, has been established in the 90s to accomodate people displaced by the armed conflict. Rapidly, more people arrived and, as it is the case in many suburban neighborhoods, the colonie became affected by armed violence. Due of the violence and the poverty, the opportunities, especially for the young people, are limited.
In 2011, the Guatemalan Red Cross, with the support of the Spanish Red Cross and the ICRC, launched the project A Better Life for Children and Youths (proyecto NiƱez y Juventud por una Vida Mejor, NIJOVI) in Santa Isabel II. A team of seven volunteers of the Guatemalan Red Cross gets closer to the young people by means of recreational activies and help.
The project strives to reduce family and school problems, drugs consumption, criminality, violence, and the lack of opportunities.
The Guatemalan Red Cross team offer psychological support, health training, as well as recreational and social activities. In 2011, more than 1000 young people participated to one or another activity of the project.

The ICRC organises and founds vocational trainings in hairdressing and car mechanics. 65 people have been trained to these skills, and 120 will receive training to other skills, such as sewing and backery.
