Description :
The earthquake which ocurred in the Port-au-Prince region on the 12th of January 2010 is the worst earthquake the country has ever had to endure.
Since the 12th January earthquake, the Haitian Red Cross, supported by the ICRC, has considerably increased its first aid services and other activities in the 'Quartiers Populaires'. Most recently the Haitian Red Cross together with the ICRC, have been carrying out a three-day distribution of 3,000 assistance 'kits' each containing a tarpaulin, rope, blankets, kitchen utensils, soap and a collapsible jerrycan, to families whose houses were destroyed in different parts of Martissant. The kits were given only to families made homeless by the earthquake, and were handed over directly to the women in each family.
Each 'kit' weighed around 17 kgs, and was pre-packed to make it easier to carry. The assistance was complementary to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' ongoing shelter activities, involving the massive distribution of tarpaulins and tents in camps for the displaced.
