Some 90,000 people have taken refuge in Chad since December 2013, having fled the conflict in the Central African Republic (CAR). The ICRC and the Red Cross of Chad have provided essential items and helped people separated from their families make some 7,000 free telephone calls from N’Djamena, Moundou, Sahr, Goré and Doba.
The ICRC helps the Red Cross of Chad distribute essential items to people who have fled the CAR. In N’Djamena, 3,000 people received saucepans, blankets, mats and jerrycans. Other distributions are planned in the south of Chad. The plight of the displaced people is only likely to get worse, especially for those without relatives or friends in Chad. Although of Chadian origin, many of them have never lived in the country. A large number of very vulnerable people – mainly women, the elderly and children – are in transit camps, most of them set up in the south of the country at Moundou, Sahr, Sido, Goré and elsewhere.
