Description :
Families have been fleeing to the small rural town of Markounda from surrounding villages since the 2nd January following a sharp increase in fighting and insecurity in the northwest of the Central African Republic. The town has grown from around 4,900 people to nearly 6,000 in just over a week. People are building makeshift huts in grounds of the parish of San Joseph de Markounda in the centre of the town. Even people living on the outskirts of Markounda have left their homes and are seeking shelter there.
People’s reserves of food and other essential supplies will quickly be depleted as roads in and out of Markounda are blocked and it is risky for people to try and reach their fields. The water points in Markounda are not enough to cover all the needs, and the makeshift shelters that people are building are overcrowded. It is mostly the women and children who are using them at night whilst their menfolk sleep outside.
