Description : "Children just had breakfast. Suddenly we heard the sound of a siren and shelling began. We took cover in the shelter, our children were crying... There was not enough air for so many people. Then parents arrived and took one child after another." Lyudmila, 52, is a director of a kindergarten in Svetlodarsk. She and her employees were trained and knew how to behave in case of emergency. Due to numerous shelling, the roof and the windows of the building were badly damaged by shards, but have been restored eventually.
The ICRC Weapon contamination unit organized a series of activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-personal Mines, commonly known as the Ottawa Treaty. For the occasion, a series of testimonies from mine and explosive remnants of war victims the Weapon Contamination unit is working with was showcased in Ukraine.
