Since few months, her health condition degraded. Her father took her to different private clinics in Baghan area but none of the doctors they met was able to provide a proper diagnosis.
The family made a 7-hour drive to reach Kabul but what they heard only brought more pain. The little girl has leukemia. Her only chance is to follow a long treatment that starts with a three-month treatment at the hospital that costs between 300 and 400 dollars a month. Leukemia drugs are not provided by the hospital and parents have to buy them in a pharmacy.
But her family has spent most of their savings in the different private hospitals and her father feels helpless. He explains how he has borrowed money to relatives but also ran out of cash. While his daughter sleeps in the ward with his mother in law, he stays in the cold, in a waiting room where dozens of other men - who can't afford a hotel - spend their nights while their children are being treated. The father works as a car mechanic in his hometown but he hasn't been able to find a daily job since he arrives and he is growing more and more concerned about the fate of his daughter.
The 300-bed Indira Ghandi Hospital is the largest paediatric hospital in the country. It is financially supported by the ICRC as part of the "Hospital Resilience Project".
