Description : A team from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) traveled with a pirogue down the Oubangui river on a mission to distribute cassava cuttings, agricultural equipment and fishing materials to prevent depletion of food reserves, and to explain to the local population how to plant the cassava cuttings.This assistance will benefit about 100,000 people in the Likouala district.

With this distribution, the (ICRC) aims to strengthen the economic capacity of the resident population of Likouala, to avoid depletion of commodities, including cassava and fish. With the volunteers of the Congolese Red Cross, ICRC assists families in five districts of the country.

In addition to fishing equipment and culture, families receive cassava cuttings tolerant to mosaic disease, caused by a virus and highly destructive.

The Likouala region is very difficult to access, and distribution continues with barges, boats, and trucks.

Armed violence in the Equateur province in DRC had pushed people to flee to the Likouala, on the other side of the border to find refuge in October 2009. According to government officials, nearly 115,000 people had crossed the river Oubangui.
