Description :
The cassava cuttings will be distributed to the local population in the Likouala district, together with agricultural equipment and fishing supplies. This is part of an ICRC programme that will benefit about 100,000 people in the district.
The programme aims to strengthen the economic capacity of the resident population of Likouala and prevent shortages of essential commodities, such as cassava and fish.
Together with volunteers from the Congolese Red Cross, the ICRC assists families in five districts of the country (Btou, Enyele, Liranga, Impfondo and Dongou). Besides fishing equipment, families receive cassava cuttings resistant to mosaic disease, which is caused by a virus and highly destructive.
Access to the Likouala region is difficult, and the ICRC will use barges, boats, and trucks to distribute these relief supplies.
In October 2009, armed violence in the Equateur province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced people to flee to the Likouala district across the border. Government officials estimate that roughly 115,000 people have crossed the Oubangui in search of refuge.
