In November 2009, realizing that many prisoners had lost contact with their families, the ICRC decided to allow them to write letters.The ICRC provided the necessary paper and envelopes, paid for stamps and sent the letter through Zimbabwe postal service. Around half of the prisoners visited by the ICRC is using this service
(around 5000 persons), organized twice a year (a second round took place in May 2010). Many prisoners only started to receive visits from their families after being able to send a letter through the ICRC.
